About
Driving Music was first born in 2007, as an outlet for the music I was writing after my former, long lasting punk rock band broke up. A few stimulating acoustic live performances later, things started clicking in unforeseen ways and what was once a pseudonym for my random home recordings eventually became a collective of musicians and artists, who’d join in their particular talents and mutual admiration to create art together. The common bond was an ongoing unsatisfaction with the current state of brazilian indie music, and the feeling that banjos, ukuleles and glockenspiels were more capable of expressing that feeling today than pounding drums or loud electric guitars.
This first 6 song ep is what came out of this gathering. Recorded at home in January 2010, it incorporates the precarious quality of the work of Paul Westerberg, Guided by Voices and Neutral Milk Hotel, and features 5 original songs, plus a rendition of Brooklyn’s own The National, “Apartment Story”. Of said 5 original songs, two of them are reinterpretations of pieces I’ve recorded in the past, that appear rearranged and somewhat rewritten in this new recording. The attentive listener will also hear echoes of other artists in these songs – ranging from the Beach Boys to Wilco – that are sampled organically in the music, as a soft analog incarnation of Girl Talk or The Avalanches. Hopefully, they come as more than mere quotations, promoting relations between these new songs and the sonic ghosts that haunt them and have brought them to life.
In its current form, Driving Music brings back to each member what was the founding spark for all the artists involved, the one thing that was so often diluted by the imaginary demands of their past bands: the love for music (first and foremost as dedicated listeners) and the sheer joy of playing it together with friends. A joy that is only complete once it’s shared with whoever wants to experience it. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
